Marie (Jeanne Goupil) is a weird girl (not retarded, just weird) who likes being the perfect little girl, just like a doll. She meets Claude (André Dussollier) who is obsessed with dolls, and even sells vintage dolls for a living. So they fall in love, get married, and start living together…But Marrie is pretty and a farmer neighboor is strangely interested in her.
As the poster says, Seria did this film after “Les Galettes de Pont-Aven”, which was a commercial hit…so he “allowed himself” to make “Marie-Poupée”, a much more minimalistic & deranged film….intended as an ode to Jeanne Goupil, who was his girlfriend since “Don’t Deliver Us from Evil”. Very creepy film, somehow always surreal & down-to-earth at the same time…
