Ecstasy (1989)

This movie was written by Moana Pozzi herself with her partner of that time, Luca Ronchi, who co-founded a former Milanese TV station called Telemilano with Silvio Berlusconi and then became a producer in Berlusconi’s Fininvest company. The story is very loosely taken from Arthur Machen’s book White Powder. It’s a kind of existentialist softcore, one step away from a porn movie, also because the movie features porn actors and actresses (Moana, Barbarella, Rocco Siffredi). It’s a pretentious but also a brave, rambling and a cult movie for sure.

Moana plays Moana, as her narration is actually a full celebratory autobiography, even if this work has a melancholy and nihilistic nuance (certainly exacerbated by the fact that today Moana and Barbarella have been taken away by the devil). I wonder what kind of audience a film like this would have: the fans of the red light circuit will have snubbed it because it was pretentious, verbose and, ultimately, with no hardcore scenes; the radical chic public, although they certainly had VHS tapes of Moana in their attics, could do nothing but mock the movie publicly. Entirely nocturnal, Roman setting. Moana was dubbed, and in fact she got very pissed off and gagged in protest.
